Make Sure Your Dog is a Welcome Guest!
As you prepare for your winter travel to warmer climates, you may find that one of your destinations isn’t pet-friendly. Maybe one of your relatives is allergic to pets or the chosen resort won’t allow pets. If you need to board your pet, keep these tips in mind so that you can choose a place where he/she will be their welcomed guest.
Many people will board their pets over busy vacation periods, and the best boarding facilities, (the ones that will take care of your pet like he was their own) are going to fill up quickly. Book as soon as you know your travel plans.
Have a Checkup
Before your board your pet, have him in for a checkup. Make sure all required vaccines are up to date, and have the vet check for any health conditions that could cause a problem. You’ll need proof of vaccines in most boarding facilities. While you are there, purchase flea prevention so you can use it ahead of time to prevent an infestation after the visit to the boarding facility.
Pack up Your Pet
Pack up your pet with a favorite treat and the food you normally feed him. Include contact information, including a local contact if possible in case of emergency. Also, add your vet’s name and number, just in case. Finally, take your pet’s bed, if allowed, so he will feel more like he is at home.
No one wants to be separated form their pet, especially over vacation time but sometimes it can’t be avoided. If you find that you will need to board your pet, a little bit of forward planning will make it go much more smoothly.
